Project EPIC

EPIC is one of the most important projects of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia. This cross-border participatory project is dedicated to the interpretation, study, exchange of views and understanding of 20th century history. It is located in the former warehouse of Slovenian Railways on Kolodvorska pot in Nova Gorica. An integral part of the EPIC Centre is the City on the Border permanent exhibition, showcasing personal stories and memories of the residents of the Nova Gorica/Gorizia region. The aim of the exhibition is to explore historical interpretations of the region and foster dialogue on identity and common heritage, all while actively involving the local community in creating its content. The platform focuses on historical and cultural challenges and encourages collaboration and constructive dialogue.

The City on the Border exhibition presents and analyses the memories of the residents of the Nova Gorica/Gorizia region, a historical intersection of cultures, languages and identities. The life stories featured offer a unique approach to understanding history through the perspective of individual experiences and reveal the relationships among residents before, during and after both world wars, and the processes that shaped the perception of the turbulent century at the border.

The aim of the exhibition and the EPIC project itself is to use personal stories and historical material to explore how different collective communities shape their interpretation of history. The idea to provide a collective, cross-border perspective mostly addresses young generations, encouraging them to live in harmony and promote tolerance.

The history of the building

EPIC has found its home in the former unloading area of Slovenian Railways, once a bustling intersection of people and goods. As part of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia, the building has been renovated and transformed into a modern interpretation centre, bridging the past and the future while providing a space for research, dialogue and the creation of collective memories.

The building consists of northern and southern AREAS. The ground floor of the northern area/part houses the permanent exhibition City on the Border, while the mezzanine above serves as a place for temporary exhibitions. The southern PART is composed of a conference room with modern equipment and almost 200 seats, as well as a charming EPIC Café, a perfect place to relax or enjoy a cup of coffee with friends and family.
